Who Is Hatem Elmohandis?

A search of Google returns less than a dozen hits for Hatem Elmohandis, but there are a couple of interesting results. The online encyclopedia Wikipedia did have a listing of this man, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatem_Elmohandis, which is nothing remarkable considering anyone with a computer and a few minutes to spare could create their own fantasy existence.

What intrigues me about this elusive character is that another posting was found at http://www.californiavoyager.com/info/ha/Hatem_Elmohandis.html. What on earth would possess this man to post a message on a Californian travel and tourism website?
According to the post he is “currently working as an I.T administrator at an Islamic school in the inner-west suburbs of Melbourne (Australia)”. Hmmm. It also states he studied Islam under Sheikh Albaani, an Islamic scholar, followed by further study under the popular Egyptian scholar Sheikh Mohamed Mutwali al-Sharaawi. Now this seems all fine at first glance but all you need to do is scratch the surface just slightly and you will find more holes than on the PGA European tour.

If the chain of events are correct he would have had to have studied under Sheikh Sharaawi in the early to mid 90’s because the great scholar died in 1998 almashriq.hiof.no/egypt/200/290/297/shaarawi/ - any earlier would be implausible given that he would have been less then 15 years old. My source in Cairo, who works at the Mogaama Building in the Egyptian capital, the bureaucratic behemoth where visa extensions and applications are approved, says that he has only visited Egypt on 3 occasions. The first visit was when he was four, the next time was in late 1993 and his last visit was at the end of 2002. Cross off the first and last visits for obvious reasons which leaves his visit in 1993 as the only possibility. Further investigation places his arrival in late November and his departure in early January 1994.

So if we were to believe these posts he would have crashed-coursed his way through his studies which would mean not only is he a genius but his grasp of the Arabic language would be of the highest standard. Un-named acquaintances who have emailed me scoffed at the suggestion that Hatem had such an understanding of Arabic, “..are you (expletive) kidding me?” was one such response.

As aforementioned the post also claims that he earlier studied under another Islamic scholar Sheikh Albaani. The obvious question is –where, when and how? He has not been to any other country, excluding in transit, than Dubai in late 2002. He could not have possible met him in Egypt because Albaani did not visit the country at the time. So he must have arranged to meet him in transit while traveling to Egypt in 1993. Pfft! preposterous!

Too many anomalies in the life of this man leaves me asking the obvious question; who is he and why is his life surrounded by smokescreens? This will, hopefully, be addressed after further investigation is undertaken. Stay tuned.

I find Hatem to be an unusual character.I have delt with him on a number of occasions and almost lives his life as a recluse. If he one day chooses to come out of his shell, I'm sure he could play an influential part in shaping the ummah here in Australia.

From the short and precious time which I had spent with the ever travelling Hatem Elmohandis, I had come to the conclusion that he is a 'Moderate Extremist'.

Any possible connnection with Taj El Hilaly?

A brilliant, heartfelt translation that has retained with great sensitivity the poignancy of the great Hatem Elmohandis. Our yearning heart is ever-inclined to name the felt desire that is ever-nourished, never satiated. His work is just in time for this lifetime.Few aspects of Hatems timeless spiritual & religious life have been as misunderstood in the West as was the Launch of Mercy Mission. If we can only introduce him to the golf course again that would be something!!Some of us are still living in a cesspool (ding ding jerry spring)

i was just searching on mohammed salem to see what came up. then i found stuff on hatem elmohandis. if it is the right person i am thinking of...did you know that both of the above actually know each other? After reading your blogs, it seems that our community has too many liars. By the way Mohammed does not represent anyone from the muslim community. You need to separate his Uni days from who he is now. He is not one of us and has nothing to do with us.
